Recently, I was provided with an Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 for review. The Idol 3 is available in both a 4.7″ and 5.5″ configuration. Since I was provided with a 5.5″ model, that’s what I will focus on.
At this point I should probably tell you that a) I’m not my “mommyblogger” wife and b) I’m an electrical engineer and c) my daily driver is an iPhone 6+. (In other words, what you’re reading right now has most likely been passed through an editor’s filter with the “people don’t want to get that technical honey” setting turned on.)
The Idol 3 is a smartphone running Android Lollipop 5.0.2, available on the Telus network here in Canada. It offers a 5.5″ full HD 1080p (that means it has the same number of pixels as the HDTV in your family room) featuring technicolor Color Enhance technology, and stereo speakers by JBL. What that translates to is a powerful mobile entertainment device. When I was field testing the Idol 3 at my office, more than one fellow engineer had to stop and remark about the quality of the sound and the display (OK so maybe I was playing the latest Star Wars trailer for bait; sue me).
But the Idol 3 is more than just a family room that fits in your pocket. The Snapdragon processor and the 2GB of RAM make for a snappy response when launching and running apps, something other devices have suffered with in the past. Plus, those devices did not have to also provide complete reversibility. That’s right: the Idol 3 has no “right way up”. You just lift and use; it automatically re-orients itself upright no matter which way you turn it, and it does so with a clean smoothness that I appreciated.
Android has come a long way since the last iteration I used with any frequency (Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean), and while I am personally too immersed in the iPhone ecosystem to leave it for a ‘droid, if I ever had to use an Android phone, the Idol 3 would definitely be on my short list of devices to switch to.

This post was written by my hubby! He says he is “A husband, a father, and an engineer. In that order.”

the quality of the sound and the display excites me the most about the Alcatel One Touch Idol 3?
I am most excited about winning because I have never had a cel. phone and the large display will be easy for me to see.
I don’t have a phone so I’ve been kind of doing my research on them. This one so far I really like.. the more I read the more appealing it is.
Thanks for the awesome review. It sounds like a pretty good smartphone.
I really like the reversibility aspect. I frequently have to rotate my phone before I can use it.
My doctor keeps telling me I need to invest in a cellphone for emergency purposes, they are so expensive, this one seems a pretty good deal though!
Thanks for the great review, someday im going to invest in one
