Lunapads – an Eco-Friendly Menstrual Product (Review and #Giveaway)

A few months ago, I started talking to Be Prepared Period on twitter. They host a monthly #periodtalk and from there, I was introduced to Lunapads.com.

I was very curious to try out Lunapads but I truly had no idea what to expect. I was excited at the prospect of not creating so much garbage waste during that time of the month.

My pads arrived and I eagerly awaited for my period to come (how often does that happen?!) so that I could test out these new pads. Actually, I decided to try them out BEFORE my period came so that I had a chance to “figure them out” before I had a real need for them.

How do Lunapads Work?

The pads are made out of 2 parts: a Pad Base with wings that fasten around the gusset of your underwear, and a Liner Insert that is secured to the top of the Pad with ric-rac bands.

The Pad Base contains 1 layer of ultra-thin nylon to minimize soaking through and the Pad Inserts are made of 2 layers of highly absorbent fleece.

You may require more information to fully understand Lunapads. They have an excellent FAQ Page.

The Lunapads website has a huge variety of informational videos from how to use Lunapads, to cleaning to using their products “on the go”. Be sure to check more of the videos out to learn just how easy using their products can be.

Pros and Cons of Lunapads (as tested by MTM)

PROS

  • Lunapads are environmentally friendly
  • Lunapads are very easy to use
  • Lunapads are better for your body

CONS

  • I found that the Lunapads did slip around (back to front) a bit much for my liking
  • They take a little while to get used to
  • Due to the slippage, I was worried during heavy flow times of leakage

Notes about CONS:
Just like when you try anything new, using and getting used to Lunapads takes some time. However, once you have given them a fair try, you might surprise yourself by really enjoying them rather than the traditional pad alternative. For now, I will continue using my Lunapads during light flow days and I’m sure over time, I will learn to rely on them more during heavy flow days. I would like to try out the Lunapanties because my theory is that will reduce the amount of slippage. Because the Lunapad base is only secured by one or two snaps, there is nothing to prevent them from moving back and forth. I’m hoping that the Lunapanties will eliminate this issue.

The next big adventure for me in more eco-friendly menstrual products is to try out the DivaCup! I’m intrigued and have spoken to a number of women who absolutely LOVE it!

I’ve used Lunapads in the past but currently use ManyMoons.

  4. My current favourite period product is Always Infinity overnights. I was totally loyal to Always until the last year or so, and now I’m trying a lot of different products.

Hi! Thanks so much for your thoughtful review! I just wanted to comment on the trouble you were having with your pads slipping. The best thing to do to ensure that your pads stay in place is to wear snug fitting cotton underwear. A lot of folks tend to have a collection of “period panties” that they wear when they are bleeding and sometimes they are a little bit more worn than our other underwear. If your panties are slightly loose fitting that can cause the slipping. Another tip is to wear a hipster or boy-cut underwear that is lower cut in the legs. This also cuts down on the possibility of slippage.
    Thanks again!

I would have to say the Diva cup is my favorite. It was a little tricky to figure out the best technique but it was all worth it. The Lunapad panty liners would be a great match!

I actually don’t have a favorite product. Right now I am fed up with my regular pads and tampons. I really want to try the Diva Cup and cloth pads. I have heard really great things about them.

My favorite period product is….breastfeeding since it helps keep my period away. Does that count? No? Ok, I like the diva cup but would love to try cloth.

I have been wanting to try these for awhile now! I do have the Diva Cup and think it’s fabulous, but sometimes I want a liner too. Thanks!
