I received a copy of both “Liking Myself” and “The Mouse, The Monster and Me” by Pat Palmer.

These books are unique, interesting and fabulous.
“Liking Myself” is geared towards children aged 5-10.
I was never taught to “Like Myself”. I was never taught to look at my strengths and weaknesses, although I do remember that my weaknesses were pointed out on a regular basis (and still are), but that’s for a different post!
By actively engaging children in the reading of this book, I believe that the message really hits home. Children are encouraged to reflect upon their own life and feelings and to write and draw those feelings too. This helps the message sink in, as it makes it tactile for them as well.
As a parent, I have learned the importance of helping a child become self aware in their strengths and weaknesses in a positive way.
My daughter enjoyed reading “Liking Myself” with me and she also enjoyed engaging in the interactive exercises included in the book. The exercises did indeed help her explore her feelings, desires, likes and dislikes which are important for her to explore. Talking about personal feelings is difficult for many of us today, however if we start early with our children, I believe that they may grow up feeling more comfortable expressing themselves.
I was very impressed with how Pat Palmer addressed the issue of dealing with a problem and letting it go, something that should be addressed with children instead of assuming that they know how to do this.
“The Mouse, The Monster and Me” is written for children ages 8 and up and therefore I didn’t share it with my daughter, but I do plan to one day. I read through it myself and was very impressed with the topics that were addressed.
This book addresses the issue of bullying and how a child should meet the fine balance between being assertive and passive when being the victim of a bully.
Both books are definitely great tools in helping children with self-esteem, assertiveness, and conflict management skills.
