Rubbermaid Produce Savers

We buy a lot of berries in our household–strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are our favourites!

I’ve always struggled with how to store them, but I will not struggle any longer!

Rubbermaid has come up with a new product called the Produce Saver. It is a specially designed container for storing and keeping produce at its freshest.

The containers come with a “Crisp Tray” insert that allows for air circulation underneath the produce in order to keep moisture away from the produce. The lids are also vented in order to allow the produce to breath.

Multi-Testing Mommy has put these new containers to the test:

I put some berries in a glass bowl with saran wrap and some berries into the Rubbermaid container and left them for a few days.

The berries in the Rubbermaid container were by far firmer than the ones from the glass bowl.

Although, I do prefer to use glass for as much as possible, I definitely will be using these Rubbermaid Produce Savers for storing my washed lettuce and berries!

The produce saver performed worse than the plastic clam shell my strawberries came in. While the tray took up space and kept the fruit from standing in moisture there was not enough ventilation to prevent water from evaporating and preventing mold from starting on the fruit. Within 24 hours my strawberries started turning mushy while the hand full that I left in the store container (because they wouldn’t fit) were still firm and ok. As an engineer I call junk, you can drill holes in your old plastic storage and get similar results as these. And DO NOT seal fruit in a bowl or cover with plastic wrap. Fruit needs to breath.

Jason O, did you wash the berries before storing them? I have found that washing without drying will turn the berries to mush.

I tried the same experiment and they lasted the exact amount of time in the fridge.

I love my rubber maid containers but have never seen these ones in store. They look good though, I hate throwing out food when I leave it in the store bags.
