For most of my childhood we lived in an apartment building. Pretty much all year we were sent outside to play, and we would just run around in the parking lot, or play in the play area. There were tons of kids, and we all just played together.
These days, our boys just play together outside usually playing different games in the back yard. But one of the things our boys look forward to the most as soon as the warm weather arrives are the family bike rides.
We let the boys ride up and down the street regularly, but will pack up the whole family a few of times a month and go for a “biking adventure”. We each have our own bikes and we love to ride together!
On our bike rides, our youngest has a bike that attaches to Daddy, and they lead the way. Then, we let our middle go next otherwise he tries to race everyone! Our oldest goes next, and takes his time. I am last.
The boys love telling everyone we pass how I always lose, since I am so slow. Usually, by the time the other riders have passed all the males in my family they are chuckling pretty hard. One guy told me if I worked really hard, maybe one day I could learn to be as fast as the rest of the family and winked as he laughed his way past!
We like to stop along the way for a nice snack and drink, then off we go again. We will usually do 10-15 km of riding on our bike adventures. It’s a great family activity and a good workout for the whole family.
Of course, all 5 of us have good quality bike helmets, so we are safe.
