DEEP-FREEZE PREDICTED FOR TORONTO TUESDAY May 10th AT NOON

Dairy Queen to attempt Guinness World Record with 21,000-lb ice cream cake

“Dairy Queen Canada will celebrate the 30th Birthday of its ice cream cake on May 10, 2011 by attempting a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest ice cream cake at Yonge-Dundas Square. The giant cake will be assembled live in the Square, and Torontonians will be able to enjoy a slice starting at noon.

“Toronto is in for a tasty deep freeze,” said Denise Hutton, Vice President of Marketing at Dairy Queen Canada. “Our cake engineers will do all the heavy lifting to build this 21,000 lb ice cream cake, but we need Toronto to come out and help us eat up our Guinness World Record!”

Special guests Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Olympic medallist Cheryl Bernard will join patient ambassadors from SickKids and Children’s Miracle Network. The event is free, with suggested donations going to Dairy Queen’s long time charitable partner, Children’s Miracle Network.

“Children’s Miracle Network is proud to be a part of the Dairy Queen World Record attempt,” said Paul Lethbridge, Director of Corporate Development & Hospital Relations, Children’s Miracle Network. “When else can eating ice cream cake help to fund medical care, research and educational programs so that Canadian kids have access to world-class care? It’s the best of all worlds – a delicious treat and a great cause.”

Dairy Queen Canada is urging Torontonians to come down and satisfy their sweet tooth with free pieces of the giant ice cream cake. It is a site worth seeing as the monstrous cake mound consists of more than: 20 thousand pounds of ice cream, 200 pounds of sponge cake and 300 pounds of icing and OREO crumble assembled by a team of approximately 100 DQ experts. Bring your kids, colleagues, neighbours and friends – there will be more than enough to go around!”
