Do you ever have an adult game night with your friends?
My favourite time to play games is at the cottage after the kids have gone to bed. We always have a blast together, whether it is playing scrabble, spoons (a game that I am known to be a complete spaz during) or cards.
September is the perfect month to unwind with your adult friends and family after the little ones have been tucked in for bed. With the stress of getting back into school routines and no vacations in sight (for most families), it’s important to remember to relax and have fun.
Taking a few lessons from one of your little ones favourite ways to spend time with friends, here are a few quick tips to help you plan your ultimate, adult-only games night:
- Prepare Your Space.
Plan ahead for which space you would like to use for your game night. Be sure it includes plenty of seating, a large flat surface for the game and plenty of end tables for guests to place refreshments on. Other things to remember when planning ahead include coasters to protect your furniture, enough pillows so everyone is comfortable and even a couple blankets – it is fall after all. These small considerations will make everyone feel welcome in your home. - Mix up Your Guests. Don’t be afraid to invite a cross section of people you know. Invite new or old friends, colleagues and even family to your next game night. While they might not all know each other in advance, games are always a great ice breaker and will bring everyone together. Also, for more interpretive games such as Apples to Apples® Freestyle, a group of different personalities will add a lot of fun and diversity to the game.
- Pick the Games Ahead of Time. Planning ahead helps everyone get in the right mood. From Uno to Pictionary, pick the games ahead of time and let your guests get excited in advance. You can also choose to center your games around a fun theme and then bring that theme to life through costumes, food and beverage and decor.
- Make it Potluck. Often the most stressful part of planning an event is preparing the food and drink. To alleviate that stress and focus your energy on the fun, make it a potluck. Invite guests to bring a side dish or drink for everyone to share. You’ll have an amazing meal without the stress and mess of cooking it all yourself. While planning activities for your littlest ones is important, it’s also important to ensure that you’re getting the fun and social time you need to relax and unwind with friends. An adult game night is the perfect way to kick-back with friends without having to venture out too far.
