Valentine’s Day Card Workshop

Have you ever noticed that a pinch of creative inspiration can set the stage for a day (or even a week) of crafting fun?

A few times a year, a little corner of our busy kitchen gets a mini reno to inspire the crafting spirit in all of my children … not to mention me ! We are at it again this Valentine’s season with our Valentine Card Workshop fully decked out with everything we need to get busy making homemade cards for a few special someones.

If you’re like me, you have a room full of organized crafting supplies that only need to be displayed in a new and interesting way to get the projects rolling. Last week I set out a little desk topped with our favourite crafting paper, some card stock folded into cards, a scissor collection, coloured pencils, glue and all kinds of decorative bits and bites. These are just some of the craft supplies that I have, but you can use whatever you have hanging around… anything goes ! I always like to make a fun little sign to display along with the supplies.

Feel free to use this FREE printable version of the Valentine Card Workshop sign that I made this year. Just tape it up nearby or place it in a plastic frame or stand to get your budding artist into the spirit.

What I love about this activity is that the creativity and joy it inspires really are contagious. No sooner does one child come up with a decorative idea for their card, than everyone else is trying that technique and adding on to it! I often look to the internet for ideas, and then the possibilities are truly endless. It is a great activity in creativity but also in thoughtfulness, as the cards are addressed and mailed out the same day (whenever possible). This way, we all finish our crafting afternoon with the warm feeling that comes from doing an act of kindness for a loved one as well. In the day of e-mail and texting, and when the post office is about to raise the cost of stamps dramatically, sending out cards in the mail is falling by the wayside. I cannot tell you how many thank you’s I have received from gratefully surprised card recipients over the years. This small act of thoughtfulness really does make someone’s day… and sometimes it is just the thing to brighten a challenging morning or inspire another family to pay it forward with their own card making and mailing fun.
