Prevention is Key!
Here are some tips for helping your children have a happy mouth:
- Reduce intake of sugary foods (including juice), especially in between meals
- Up to the age of 8 or 9, ensure you supervise your children during brushing and flossing
- It is a good idea to visit a dentist every 6 months, if possible
- Change toothbrushes every 3 months
- Children can start using an electric toothbrush as early as age three when supervised
In our house, we use an electric toothbrush at least once a day, if not twice. The other brushing is done using a manual toothbrush like the Oral-B® CrossAction® Pro-Health™ Toothbrush.
We call our electric toothbrush, “Mr. Buzzy”. This is a fun name that our amazing hygenist uses to make her cleaning tool less scary to the kids. I love using an electric toothbrush to clean my childrens’ teeth because I feel it does a more accurate cleaning job. We have one child (my 8 year old) who cooperates and stands still and one who is four, who doesn’t know what the words “stand still” means. Using Mr. Buzzy on them allow me to feel more confident that their teeth have been cleaned as best as they can be.
I know when I use an electric toothbrush vs a manual one, I can feel the difference in how clean my teeth feel. The electric toothbrush definitely does a more effective job at removing plaque!
Did you know that children can start using an electric toothbrush as early as age three*?
The Oral-B Pro-Health for Me Vitality electric toothbrush is the perfect electric toothbrush for kids and tweens. This electric toothbrush has a waterproof handle with fun designs and is compatible with multiple toothbrush heads – including an Ortho Brush Head refill designed to clean away gunk around braces. It also features a brushing timer that ensures their brushing style goes the extra mile for the dentist-recommended two minutes.
Don’t forget about the FLOSS!
Flossing is important because proper flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from those spaces between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach.
How to floss:
- Wind 18 inches of floss around your middle fingers
- Gently glide floss between teeth to the gum line
- Curve the floss to contact as much of the tooth as possible
- Gently move the floss up and down
- Use a fresh section of the floss for each tooth
In our house, most of us have very tight spaces between our teeth. We have grown to LOVE the Glide Floss because it slides between those tight spaces with more ease.
- Singing songs
- Playing dentist
- Catching the sugar bugs
- Pretending his teeth are so shiny when we are done that it hurts our eyes
- Timers
You name it, we’ve tried it, but one thing we haven’t tried is the Yuck Mouth game for Android and Apple devices. I bet both of my children would love this game. It also provides them with an excellent visual! Yuck is right!

My daughter is just about 18 months old now and we get her to stand with us as much as possible when we’re brushing our teeth and she mimics us with her brush. It’s a start! 🙂 She seems to like it and find it fun, so I hope that carries on throughout the years to come.

We floss my son’s teeth with a D-style pick. It’s a lot easier than trying to fit adult fingers into a toddler’s mouth.

My oldest(who this would be for) needs to be constantly reminded to clean her teeth better, she tends to do a cursory brush and leave the bathroom and then we have to tell her to go back in. She’s getting more and more adult teeth and I don’t want her to have to get a lot of dental work done. It sucks!
My son really doesn’t like to brush but i think a electric charter one would help
i bought my kids electric toothbrushes to help them brush their teeth better and trying to get them to floss is painful!

Dianne G, on rafflecopter My grandchildren are pretty good about looking after their teeth. I gave them a tooth timer so now they know they have to brush until the buzzer goes off.
they tend to forget to floss
My youngest 2 are great about brushing, flossing and using children’s mouthwash. They need reminders to go do it but never complain. My oldest son was hard to get to brush until he got his first cavity. He would lie and say that he did it when he hadn’t up until that cavity. He was so upset that he had gotten a cavity that after that I have never had to remind him again.
