Introducing Kids Help Phone’s new Always There app

Young people everywhere in Canada can count on Kids Help Phone to be there with professional online and phone counselling at any time of the day or night.

Now, they can also reach Canada’s leading youth counselling service on their mobile devices with the new Always There app.

Always There is the first app of its kind in Canada that connects young people to professional help and support.

Created in collaboration with young people across the country, it is geared towards users ages 12 to 16 and includes:

  • exclusive interactive features;
  • content from the Kids Help Phone Info Booth – a library of clinically-endorsed information on many of the important issues kids deal with today;
  • and a direct connection to Kids Help Phone professional counsellors

Young people from across the country voted on the design of Always There, as well as its name and interactive features, the Stress Buster and Feelings Log.

“We worked with a group of young people who told us what they wanted to see in the app,”says Janice Kelly, co-developer of Always There and a research writer at Kids Help Phone. “They came up with two final feature ideas and then voted on them. The votes were so close that we decided to create both.”

Here’s an example of how these features can help.

The Feelings Log helps users track how they’re feeling with a monthly calendar.

“In the Feelings Log, young people are able to select how they are feeling in the moment,” Janice says. “Doing this can help young people to notice patterns in their feelings, which can help them to better understand and manage their emotions.”

If an Always There user frequently feels anxious at a similar time each day, they can program the app to receive a joke, tip, or quote at that same time each day, to help them feel better.

The Stress Buster provides users with over 200 youth-submitted self-care tips, inspirational quotes and jokes, and that number will grow as users can anonymously add and share new content.

The first phase of the app includes English versions available for the iOS, Android and Blackberry. The FREE Always There app is available for download on the Kids Help Phone website, in the iTunes App Store, the Google Play store and in Blackberry App World.

A French version and additional features will be made available in 2013.

    I do think that it’s important for children to have the chance to call a help line, but not only children need a help line unfortunately. I have a friend in England who volunteers on a help line and it’s sad how many calls they get – some even from the USA.
