Dear 16 Year Old Me – Skin #Cancer Education

A few weeks ago, I went to an event held by LaRoche-Posay. It was such an educational evening all about the company LaRoche-Posay, but also teaching us about the importance of Sun Protection and our health. I walked away from that evening feeling empowered and more knowledgable about skin care and sun protection. I also truly believe that LaRoche-Posay cares about their customers. The amount of research that they are involved in to ensure that their products are just right for their customers is impressive and the initiative that they have shown in order to educate people about skin care and sun protection is incredible.

I learned of a website while participating in the event that is an important site to check out as we approach warmer months and will be spending a significant amount of time outside.

MySkinCheck.ca is a website that offers you the opportunity to learn how to check your own skin for signs of skin cancer. It allows you to Evaluate Your Personal Risk Profile, it teaches you How to Check Your Skin and it shares valuable information for Good Sun Habits.

The David Cornfield Melanoma Fund has created an incredibly powerful video called 16 Year Old Me that really shows you the severity of Melanoma skin cancer. This video is worth watching and sharing with everyone you know! If had watched that when I was 16, it would have influenced me for sure.

My province has just banned indoor tanning for under 18 (unless Doctor note.) There is a bit of an outcry, and although I support the ban, the kids will just tan more outdoors so I dont know if it will help.

Guppy and I may live in the same province as this has just happened here in BC also. I aplaud the move!

    I wish I hadn’t been such a sun worshiper when I was a teenager.

    Thanks

    Thanks for sharing this.

My father has had an ongoing battle with melanoma, so this hits home for me.

  4. This is such a great video, and such an important topic. You don’t think about the consequences of your actions when you are young.

And working in the field of oncology, I know how important cancer prevention is.

  6. Wow, this is so amazing. I wish I could tell myself the same thing. I’m 19, and only about a year and a half ago I got into tanning in beds because I loved how I looked. I feel so silly now, because I believed so much it didn’t hurt me. I do miss it – but I can keep hoping that with the standard for sun care changing so will our standards for beauty and I’ll be proud in my PALE skin. – SASS

Wow, thanks for sharing..I was someone who tanned when i was youger…Hated the paleness of my skin in the summer. I wish there was something safer for our children to use and I also wish we as a society could just be pleased with how we look.
