When my almost 5 year old daughter was a baby, BPA wasn’t a topic that we knew about. It makes me sick to my stomach now to think about the harmful chemicals she must have been exposed to and what they have done to her body.
I remember when we first found out about BPA in baby bottles, my Mom tried to make me feel better by reminding me that back when she was pregnant with me, they didn’t know that smoking was bad for pregnant women. That didn’t make me feel any better because I know how I feel about the smoking–how could they have thought it would be ok for the unborn baby?!
Anyhow, thankfully, now we know about it and many companies are coming up with safe, BPA free baby products. One of the most popular companies out there (the one that I first heard about going BPA free) is Born Free.
BornFree™ has developed a range of products baby bottles, cups and accessories that is totally free of the potentially dangerous chemicals Bisphenol-A (BPA), Phthalates and PVC.
I was provided with (free of charge to me) Born Free sippy cups, a teether, nipples and a formula dispenser to try out.
Sippy Cups
Born Free sippy cups are unique to many of the sippy cups out there in that they have a low vacuum valve that allows free flow of liquid which helps to reduce the risk of ear infections. The cup has removable handles which is nice so that you have the option of taking them off when baby no longer requires them (it makes the cup much more portable).
I have to say that these cups took my son much longer to get the hang of than other cups that I have given him. While he will drink out of them if that is his only option, he does not prefer these cups. What I don’t care for is the fact that if it drops or tips over, water spurts out and makes a mess. That must be the catch if you want an easier flow of liquid for the baby. I know many of the other sippy cup options do require a very strong sucking action to consume liquid. Because I truly trust the name Born Free, I continue to give these to my son, but they aren’t our favourite.
Teether
The BornFree™ Silicone Teething Ring and Gumbrush is made from medical grade silicone and is 100% free of Bisphenol-A, Phthalates and PVC. The multi-purpose Teether helps cleans teeth of plaque and bacteria from day one while stimulating and massaging baby’s gums. The Teether can be stored in the refrigerator and features an easy-grip handle and 3 different textures to enhance tactile sensation.
This teether is GREAT! Not only does it help to relieve the pressure created during teething itself, I truly believe that it does an excellent job of helping to clean my 15 month old’s teeth and gums. He is at a very difficult age for being cooperative while brushing his teeth. My hubby and I tag team and I still don’t always feel like I do a good job. The fact that my son migrates to this teether daily, many times a day, makes me feel good about the fact that he is helping his teeth be even healthier. I am so glad that Born Free makes a product like this! Another added bonus is that it isn’t a choking hazard like some of the competing products in the area of oral hygiene for babies, so I know that he is safe when he uses it.
Formula Dispenser
Although I have breastfed both of my children (and continue to breastfeed my son), my daughter did drink formula after she was weaned for almost a year. I HATED using the awkward scoop that was provided with the formula cans and would have loved having the option of a formula dispenser to pre-measure the formula for the bottles.
I remember measuring the formula into tupperware containers and then having to spoon it out bit by bit into the bottles so I didn’t spill any. If had had the Born Free Formula Dispenser, I can only imagine how much easier life would have been!
In my mind, Born Free has a very reputable name and I trust that this company does everything they can to ensure the production of safe baby feeding products. Please note that I am only stating MY opinion and I take no responsibility for the companies products.
