Healthcare spending is in the news on a daily basis these days. We are hearing from all levels of government that spending has to be curbed, and cutbacks are coming. In Canada we spend almost ½ of every government dollar on our Healthcare system. Now don’t get me wrong, I am forever grateful to this system and how it provided for my family when my son was born 2 months early. However there are ways that we can make the system more efficient so that we can focus resources on other problem areas.
What is what simple way to decrease heath spending on Ontario? By having birth centres where women can be cared for and supported in normal healthy birth.
- The average hospital c-section rate in Ontario is DOUBLE the recommended World Health Organization rate of 15% – decreasing the rate of non-medically necessary c-sections could save Ontario $50 million per year
- Births attended by midwives cost the health system less, and women under the care of midwives are discharged quicker and receive follow up care in their own home
- The safety of birth centres is well established around the world, and Ontario has more than 75 midwifery clinics with highly trained staff that are ready to provide top quality care and support.
Birth Centres – optimized care to support normal healthy birth, health care savings – it just makes sense!
