What Kind of Lunch Container Option Do You Prefer?

What exactly do I mean about SAFER school lunches? This time, I’m not talking about WHAT we are packing for lunch, but rather the types of lunch container that we are choosing for our children.

Back when my children were starting Kindergarten, I searched high and low for the best lunch container option that was:

  1. Easy to open.
  2. Easy to close.
  3. Was spill-proof.

Back then (and it wasn’t that many years ago either), I settled on leak-proof plastic containers for all of the above reasons. The only other option that I considered (for a BRIEF moment) was glass, but decided that glass was not a safe or practical option as it can break AND it is quite heavy. Their little backpacks were heavy enough as it was without adding glass lunch containers to their lunch bags!

Here is what I don’t like about plastic lunch containers:

  1. They are hard to clean.
  2. They often retain smells.
  3. They can leach into the food.
  4. They crack.

MY after school routine includes SURVIVAL, stuffing food into the kids’ hungry bellies preventing meltdowns, emptying backpacks, emptying lunch bags and washing the lunch dishes. I cannot stand washing dishes, but I know that washing plastic by hand is much better, from a health and safety perspective, than putting them in the dishwasher. Therefore, I choose to hand wash the lunch dishes. I cannot stand that greasy feel, despite using a fair amount of dish soap (and yes, I have tried many different brands), that is often left on the plastic after I have scrubbed it “clean”.

Last Fall, at the Babytime Show, I was introduced to a new kind of lunch container that is made out of stainless steel. I was immediately intrigued. After having a lengthy chat with Nita, the founder, I loved her mission of helping families learn of a new lunch container option that is convenient, safe and is LONG-LASTING!

Dalcini Stainless lunch containers are:

  • 100% plastic and BPA free
  • made of medical grade stainless steel
  • light weight
  • durable
  • easy to open
  • dishwash safe
  • odourless
  • stain free

These containers have become so popular in our house, that there have actually been “fights” over who gets to take them. If they are clean and available, my husband (who leaves the house first in the morning), has been grabbing the square container. He doesn’t often comment on products like that, but he has shared on a number of occasions how much he likes them. They are the perfect size for a sandwich!

I love that the circle-shaped containers nest together once they are clean, which means my messy and FULL plastics bin will eventually look clean, tidy and organized.

My kids both find the containers easy to open, they have commented that their food stays colder AND even when my son drops the containers (he’s a 7 year old boy, enough said, right?), they don’t dent, which was something that initially was concerned about. A large variety of peanut free school snacks fit beautifully in these lunch containers!
