Description:
Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.
I had a girls night out to see an advanced screening of the movie The Help starring Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone and directed by Tate Taylor. As it turned out, the girls night out turned out to be a GIRL night out – it was just me. This was my very first time ever attending a movie by myself, but I was totally fine by that. A couple of hours to myself is always a nice treat. Especially when I get to see such a well done movie like The Help!
I was very impressed with this movie, that it could make me smile, laugh, cry, think, feel, feel and FEEL some more! Gosh, I felt for those women in the movie, my heart poured out to them and it pours out to the many, many people who did face such terrible treatment.
This movie was about feelings – how our actions, our lack of actions and our words can affect others more than we realize, right down to the core. It was also about feelings and human character. The Help also addressed feelings of empowerment, standing up for what you believe, courage and bravery to name a few.
I left this movie feeling empowered myself, that being just one person, we are capable of making change if we believe and we try hard enough. I also left being reminded of just how important it is to continue teaching my children the moral that “it’s what is on the inside that counts” – “it doesn’t matter what someone looks like” and to talk to them about the importance of treating everyone equally.
